The App Store is the place you can obtain apps specifically for Apple devices such as iPads and iPhones.
If you have an Android device instead, you obtain apps from Google Play. We will talk about this in the next activity, Getting apps for Android phones and tablets.
Using the App Store
If you haven’t used the App Store before, you need to sign-up.
You’ll need the details of your Apple ID, which includes the email address and password you used when you first set up your iPhone or other Apple device.
You may also need to provide credit card, debit card or PayPal account details before you can download apps, even if they’re free.
Signing up to the App Store with an iPhone
On the next slide is a video to show you how to sign up to the App Store using an iPhone.
On the next slide, click the play button on the video to watch it. You can also click anywhere on the video to pause or restart it.

Signing up to the App Store with an iPhone or iPad
This demonstration video is approximately 3 minutes and 3 seconds in duration. It demonstrates the steps to sign up to the official Apple App store so that you can download apps for your Apple smart device. There is text and animation on stage throughout the video.
Once the video starts, the intro panel fades and we see the screen is split into two parts. On the left-hand side is an animation of a typical Apple iPhone, but the steps will be similar on an iPad. On the right-hand side, there is text displayed, which is the script for the voiceover track.
Voiceover: "You need to provide certain information to the App Store before you can get apps. To start, have your Apple ID and password handy. You will have created these when you first set up your iPhone or iPad. To begin, tap on the App Store icon on your iPhone."

The left-hand panel shows all the personal information has been added and the 'Next' button is tapped to complete the registration. A new page appears showing 'Apple ID completed' and confirming the Apple ID can now be used to access all Apple services.

The App Store Search function
On the App Store, you can look for an app by tapping the magnifying glass symbol and entering your search into the onscreen keyboard. You can search by:
- The name of the app (for example, Express Plus Medicare)
- The type of app (for example, government services)
- The publisher of the app (for example, Services USA)
Alternatively, you can tap the microphone icon on the onscreen keyboard and just say the words instead of typing them.
Downloading and installing an App Store app
When you’ve found the app you want, you can download and install it to your iPhone or iPad.
Tap the Get button if it’s a free app, or the price button if the app is not free.
Next, tap Install or Buy and enter your Apple ID password or provide your fingerprint to validate the request when asked. The app will start to download. When it has finished downloading, you can press the Home button, and you will be able to see the new app on your home screen.
How do I find an app on my device?
If you have lots of apps on your phone, it can be hard to find the icon as there may be many Home screens to check.
On an iPhone or iPad, the most recently downloaded app icon is usually placed at the end of the last home screen.
A quick way to find an app is to get your device to search for it. Swipe down from the middle of the screen, and enter the name of the app into the search box. Your device will then find the app for you.
How do I get rid of the ads?
Many apps from the App Store are funded by running advertisements within the app. If there is a small cross in the corner you can tap it to make the ad go away. Chances are, though, another will quickly take its place.
Alternatively, if you find your free app has too many ads and they are too distracting, you can consider changing to another app that does similar things.
