Our digital skills workshops not only teach practical lessons but also transform how we perceive time and space. For instance, at the Ahmanson Senior Center in Los Angeles, Digital Tech Coach Allie guided senior students in their first lesson on using Google Docs by creating Valentine’s Day cards. This engaging exercise introduced them to the basics of Google Docs, such as opening a new document, formatting text, inserting images, and sharing their work with others.
One of the key aspects of the lesson was teaching students how to insert an online image into their document, adding visual appeal, and teaching them a valuable skill they can use in many other contexts. They also learned how to personalize their cards by changing fonts, colors, and styles, making their messages truly unique.
The workshop not only taught practical digital skills but also showed how technology can enhance creativity and communication. Through collaboration and real-time editing features, students learned to work together, provide feedback, and make edits, enhancing their understanding of teamwork and digital collaboration.
Moreover, the workshop highlighted how technology can transform traditional experiences. The students discovered that the traditional Valentine’s Day card-giving experience has been digitized, allowing them to create and share cards instantaneously, all from the comfort of their homes. This digital skill lesson not only saved the students a trip to the store and money on physical cards but also a significant amount of time.
